Physical education at MU is organised by the university-wide Department of Physical Education, which provides physical education programmes at individual faculties through its departmental units. The Department of Physical Education is the only guarantor of activities implemented by the Masaryk University Brno Sport Club (VSK MU Brno). The main aim of the Department’s work is to enable students to take part in sports, and to provide them with opportunities to relax and regenerate their strength and rest in an active way. Students thus learn and acquire the right habits for a healthy lifestyle.

At individual faculties, physical education is implemented in a variety of ways. Generally speaking, in the first years of studies, physical education forms part of the study curriculum (one course in sport included) and is completed with credit. In higher study years, physical education is part of the supplementary study programme and is optional. Students are able to choose a sport discipline offered in the Department’s programme, a principle which applies for both types of physical education course described above. The range of possibilities is very wide and allows MU students to choose a discipline they favour: basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, table tennis, aerobics, ballet, judo, swimming, canoeing, conditioning exercises, bodybuilding.

The Department also organises many different types of sport courses: downhill skiing, cross–country skiing, courses leading to sport instructor licences, watercraft courses, windsurfing, cycling, hiking, rafting, mountain–biking, an introduction into mountain climbing, etc.

The University Sport Club has 21 teams and provides sport opportunities for MU students both at the active and top-performance level. In national league competitions, MU is represented by 6 + 8 teams, at local competitions by 9 + 4 teams. Many MU teachers play a role as a team coach or leader.

An important part of the teachers’ work is organising sport activities of MU students. Dr. Eva Slomková is the deputy head of the EAAS executive committee. Dr. Karel Opravil is the head of the EAAS supervisory board and the chair of the Brno High School Sport organisation. Dr. Eva Slomková has been appointed the head of the national academic team for the winter World University Games ’99 held in the Slovak Republic. Dr. Korys and Dr. Opravil have been appointed coaches of the Czech national academic skiing team and will take part in the above–mentioned World University Games.

In co–operation with the University Sport Club, the Department held a great number of prominent sporting events, including the International Academic Championship of the Czech Republic (a part of the UNI/FIS European Cup in Alpine skiing), the Academic Championship of the Czech Republic with international participation in classical skiing, and the Academic Championships of the Czech Republic in table tennis, golf and karate.

Teachers of the Department participated in five conferences and contributed to the publishing of various methodological materials (Methodics SPVŠ 98, Educational Programme of the Association for the Teaching of Skiing in the Czech Republic) and lecture notes (Trainee of Skiing MZLU 1997).
