Prof. Dr. Eduard Schmidt, Vice–Rector

Prior to August 31st, 1998, the Academic Council gathered three times, and following appointment of new members in September 1998, a further twice. The Academic Council was regularly informed by the MU Rector on the affairs of MU and discussed proposals for the conferring of the degree of Professor (twenty in total), proposals for the awarding of honorary academic positions, Silver and Gold Medals, and the accreditation of post-graduate subjects.

One gathering of the Academic Council dealt only with the subject of research activities implemented at MU. There are 25 projects altogether amounting to a value of CZK 67.2 million.

Post-graduate Study

Basic statistical data are stated in table 2a and 2b. Average numbers of post-graduate students are constantly growing, although the pace of growth is slowing. The relative division of students between faculties remains constant in comparison with 1997, but at the same time there remains a significant imbalance. The factor of greatest concern is the small number of graduates when compared to the total number of post-graduate students.

Scholarly and Academic Publications

Data obtained from individual faculties are stated in table 4 and listed in regard to the character of publications. In comparison to 1997, there has been remarkable growth in all areas. Most significant is the increase in the number of monographs and articles for international journals, the types of academic publication work most highly valued. The growing number of textbooks, lecture notes and articles for the general public is also an important part of the increase in publications by MU scholars.

Many activities in the field of the arts are characteristic of the Faculties of Education and Arts. In 1998, there were more than a hundred arts presentations, not least in terms of chamber music and choir singing

(Faculty of Education). Also remarkable were the number of recordings for radio made by the Faculty of Arts and the number of exhibitions given at both faculties.

 Organisation of Research and Development

Data in table 5 attempt to express in figures the recognition of the academic community by a broader professional public. Individual activities naturally differ from one another, and the professional public accords some activities more significance than others.

Individual numbers do prove that there are great differences between faculties and that often these do not correspond precisely with data concerning grants or academic publications. They are, however, proof of the great range of creative activities performed by the academic community.
