The Department of Language Teaching provides language education at non-philological faculties, viz. Faculty of Economics and Administration, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Informatics. The objective of language teaching is to develop knowledge of scientific and technical terms in English, German, French, Russian and Spanish. It is responsible for teaching Czech in courses for foreign students. Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Law provide courses in Latin for medical and law students and a course in rhetoric.

The most important development of the Department in 1996 was the completing and opening of the self-access centre located in the building of Rector Office MU. The Centre was opened in February 1996 and till the end of the year it provided services to 3000 students, teachers and other workers of the University. It offers teaching programmes aimed at broadening the knowledge of everyday English but also CD ROM encyclopaedias of medicine, science and arts. At the end of the year the Department satisfied the demands of students requesting materials for German and French learning. The interest in the self-access centre shows how an important part of university education is voluntary and independent study going beyond compulsory education.

As for research and scientific work the teachers were continuing with postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Arts MU, some were engaged in grant projects and others were preparing teaching texts.

In the last year the teachers attended many workshops, the most important of which was the active participation in the international conference of the Community of European Language Centres (CercleS) and the preparation of language session as part of the conference organised by the Faculty of Economics and Administration.

The Department developed and formulated the policy of standard and above-standard education at all faculties. This project will be launched in the 1997/98 school year.
