The year 1996 was a year commemorating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty. Training teachers for primary schools and "free study and developing educational science and their affiliated branches were the main objectives of the newly established teacher training faculties fifty years ago. This objective is still the main mission of the Faculty which prepares teachers in a 5-year program leading to a master's degree for work at secondary schools. To commemorate the anniversary the Faculty organised 10 scientific conferences, 21 workshops and symposia and a number of events such as concerts, exhibitions, sports academies and tournaments. The events were a unique opportunity to display achievements of scientific and research activity and artistic skills, to exchange information and experience and establish new contacts.

Research and artistic activities are encouraged by the Faculty whose aim is to prepare teachers of high moral, professional and methodological qualities. This was clearly documented by an international conference "Ways to creative school" which was the culmination of the celebrations. Besides the joint presentation of achievements all departments and institutes organised workshops, international conferences and symposia devoted to individual disciplines.

At the artistic level besides the Faculty Choir great achievements were achieved by soloists (V. Richter - singing, P. Hála - piano, I. Bartoš - organ, M. Slavík - violin) on the domestic and the international stage. Also artists had exhibitions in the CR and abroad. The Department of Physical Training organised an international competition in gymnastics Euroteam, continued its cooperation with handicapped children from the Institute of Social Care, Kociánka, which led to a ceremonial sports academy in BOBY Centre.

The number of grants was practically the same as in the past years, being relatively low (3 grants from the Ministry of Education, 1 from the Grant Agency, 6 from the Fund of Development, 2 from TEMPUS).

In 1996 the Faculty had 3462 students, which is 5.77 % more than in the previous year. The Faculty offered post-graduate courses in 5 disciplines. Studies for a master's degree are intended for teachers of primary schools and lower classes of secondary schools and for teachers of infant schools. Every first-year student must choose one of 13 specialised courses. Students trained for teaching at secondary and basic artistic schools are offered courses in subjects which were accredited for the third stage of schools. All types of studies for a master's degree are a combination of two subjects.

As for studies for a bachelor's degree the Faculty offered one-subject courses in English, German and French, courses in specialised pedagogy and several courses of supplementary studies. A full-time course for a bachelor's degree in social pedagogy with emphasis on leisure time and some specialised courses aimed at providing qualification for a higher type of school were offered.

In 1996 international liaisons developed qualitatively and quantitatively . The staff was engaged in programmes undertaken under the agreements between MU and universities in Regensburg, Poznan, Katowice, Wroclaw and Vienna (e.g. physics, philosophy, civics, etc.) and developed or established new contacts with other universities and institutes. Visits were organised to 22 countries among the most often visited are Slovakia, Germany, Poland, and Austria. The main objective of visits was participation in international congresses (England, Canada, Germany, Switzerland), conferences and workshops while some of them were organised in collaboration with this Faculty. Ten visits were made as part of joint projects (departments of physics, philosophy, civics, history). The goal of the others was to prepare jointly bulletins, carry on discussions about syllabi (departments of English, Romance languages, chemistry), didactic problems, post-graduate programmes, etc. The Faculty was a co-ordinator of several projects (department of history coordinated a project of European studies of historical awareness in young people in Europe, etc.). The staff of the department of the Czech language and special pedagogy were invited to give lectures and take part in workshops held at universities abroad. The total number of visits to foreign countries was 152.

In 1996 there were good opportunities for fellowships and secondments abroad (department of special pedagogy, institute of physical culture and department of Romance languages) but the demand was higher than the supply. Forty students participated in these programmes.

The Faculty welcomed 60 guests from abroad. Their visit was connected with delivering a lecture (special pedagogy, Russian studies, English studies, etc.), discussions about the state of tuition (Romance studies) and research (physics). Some guests took part in conferences organised by the Faculty (physics, pedagogy, psychology, artistic training, physical training, etc.) The Faculty was visited by representatives of the French Embassy and the Ministry of Education, France. The Faculty was also visited by Alain Michel (main inspector of the Ministry of Education in France) and André-Yves Portnoff who are in charge of the development of curriculum for teaching French as a foreign language at foreign schools. During Days of Friendship between MU and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan the Faculty welcomed a vice-rector for general matters Prof. Przemyslaw Hauser and a sub-dean Prof. Kazimierz Przyszczypkowski. The ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Teacher Training was attended by deans of all faculties of teacher training in the CR and guests from partner universities and faculties in Bratislava, Nitra, Trnava, Vienna and Dresden.

The number of publications increased (original scientific papers in review bulletins, original studies in abstract journals and others). The Faculty published 55 titles (5810 pages) of which 7 were bulletins, 1 monograph and 47 teaching materials. The teaching materials were prepared for students of the Faculty but most of them were also used by other Czech faculties of teacher training.

The central library stores 126193 books, some of them are located in 21 departmental and institute libraries. 3979 new titles were purchased and 5536 books were discarded.

Upon proposal of the Academic Council of the Faculty of Teacher Training on 7 November 1996 Masaryk University conferred an honorary doctorate in arts on Prof. PhDr. Antonín Tučapský, who studied at the Faculty of Teacher Training and the Faculty of Arts in 1947-1951 and who is a internationally recognised personality of musical life. His work is closely linked with the Choir of Moravian Teachers. Under his leadership (1964 - 1973) the Choir became famous and successful. As he was not allowed to make full use of his knowledge and skills by the past regime he left for England in 1975 where he became a professor in music theory in Trinity College of Music in London. At the concert given to commemorate the anniversary of the Faculty and in honour of the honorary doctor some of his compositions were presented by the Choir of Masaryk University and the Choir of Moravian Teachers.
