The Faculty of Science provides an education in natural science (physics, chemistry, biology and Earth science) and in mathematics and anthropology. These subjects differ in methodology, techniques and stage of development and this is all reflected in research and curricula and the level of formal description of findings and their integration into general view.

An integral five-year study for a master's degree includes 13 subjects of professional studies and 14 combinations of teacher studies. The number of completed courses for a bachelor's degree rose to 113. With no links to studies for a master's degree, the Faculty offered 4 courses for a bachelor's degree: applied physics with reference to astrophysics, applied mathematics and geography, cellular and molecular diagnostics and geology in combination with museology. Of great importance are post-graduate studies in 34 accredited subjects. There are 158 full-time post-graduate students out of whom 9 are foreigners and 148 are students of distance post-graduate studies. Post-graduate students are expected to submit high quality theses and contributions to renowned foreign journals and to help in providing practical training. Post-graduate students are awarded a scholarship and provided accommodation in the hall of residence. In 1996 28 post-graduate students received a PhD degree. The number of full-time post-graduate students is on the increase and the greatest increase is at this Faculty.

Very good results in research, publication, organisation and sports were appreciated and 3 awards were granted by the Dean and 9 awards by sections. Excellent study results (1.0) were highly praised and 128 students received a reward.

Teachers and researchers of the Faculty obtained 33 grants from the Grant Agency, 1 grant from the Academy of Sciences CR, 22 grants from the Fund of Universities Development. Eleven branch projects and 13 grants were from different sources, some of which were foreign. Research was supported by the establishment of 4 laboratories built within the program Support for Research at Universities. These are a laboratory of thin layers and nanostructures, a laboratory for applied physics and plasma and plasma chemistry which will be jointly used by the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Teacher Training MU, Military Academy in Brno and ÚFP AV CR in Prague, a laboratory of biomolecular structure and dynamics and a laboratory of molecular plant physiology. The funds received through the grants totalled 82 million CZK.

In 1996 teachers and researchers published 15 monographs out of which 3 were published abroad. The number of scientific studies published in renowned journals was 187, 144 of them were published abroad.

The completion of the greenhouse reconstruction in the botanical garden will be important for research undertaken by botanists and for a closer co-operation with the public promoted by the Society of the Friends of Botanical Gardens.

The Faculty through its departments organised several conferences, workshops and summer schools. Among the most important were "GIS Frontiers in Business and Science", "Tokoen 1996", "River bed IV", "Blue Danube", "Chemometry IV", "Hakone V", "Quarter 96", etc.

Other important events included the awarding of the Josef Hlávka Scientific Prize 1995 in Medical Science to Prof. Jan Beneš for his book "Man" in February 1996, the awarding of the Golden Medal of MU to Prof. Rudolf Musil for his distinguished career in palaeontology and his organisational, teaching and popularisation activities at MU. Another Golden Medal went to doc. Oldřich Konvička for discovery in genetics. A Silver Medal was granted to Prof. Jiří Vicherek for his long and valued career in botany and its promotion at the Faculty of Science.
